Salyu - Peaty

Salyu's third solo single doesn't disappoint, but could have been done a little better.

With something that's a little different for Salyu's smoother, softer melodies, this one is far more bouncy but per usual in her delicate way. I have no idea what "Peaty" is supposed to mean in this context, but I still love the song. But to be honest, it's not one of her best. It felt a little forced, if anything. The b-side, "Suna", is more to her usual style of soft interwoven melodies. It's still nice to listen to when you need a little cheer instead of decompressing with her softer material.

It's been more than 4 years since Salyu released her album as the idol "Lily Chou-Chou" to accompany the movie release of "Lily Chou-Chou no Subete". She's changed a lot through her solo work, even though she kept a lot of the staff that worked with her on the Lily Chou-Chou project. She showed her flexability with Ilmari in 2003, and released two other singles last year. Each had its own style and grace and that's probably why Salyu is such an great artist - much like Shiina Ringo, she tries many different melodies and styles to her work without fear. Even though "Peaty" is not my favourite single, I still admire her for trying new styles fearlessly.

I look forward to "Suisei" and her first solo album, "Landmark" releasing in two months.

Final Rating: B+
