Paradise Kiss 1 (translated)

Summary: Yukari wants nothing more than to make her parents happy by studying hard and getting into a good college. One afternoon, however, she is kidnapped by a group of self-styled fashionistas calling themselves "Paradise Kiss." Yukari suddenly finds herself flung into the roller-coaster life of the fashion world, guided by George, art-snob extraordinaire. In a glamorous makeover of body, mind and soul, she is turned from a hapless bookworm into her friends' own exclusive clothing model.

Review: I read this series when it was first released back in 2001 or 02, and I think it's one of the best translations Tokyopop has ever done. If anything, since then their translations have totally gone downhill. So I've decided to revisit this series.

This was the first Yazawa Ai series I had ever read, and ever since I've been hooked on her unique style of storytelling, character construction, and fashion. I still have not had the time to read this series' prequel, Gokinjou Monogatari, but the good thing is you don't really have to read it to be able to understand Paradise Kiss. Thus, Paradise Kiss can be seen as a standalone series. I also love how Yazawa makes a very subtle statement about the state of the Kyouikumama, the Juku children, and Japanese education in general today. It's awesome.

Paradise Kiss (anime)
Gokinjo Monogatari (prequel) (manga)
