Loveless 4

Summary: Kouya and Yamato fight Soubi alone and kick his ass. Youji and Natsuo, also Zero, tell Ritsuka more about how Fighters work, until they hear the noise of a fighter expanding their system - the other Zero has arrived and takes down Natsuo and Youji in a single spell! And now they're asking Loveless for a rematch? (from bishounen.com for ep 10 of the anime which is identical to the manga here, the following): Yamato comes to Ritsuka's school and talks him into going for coffee with her by talking about Seimei, who she says it's good Ritsuka is not like. He spills coffee on her. She jumps up, and then goes to clean it off. While there, we see flashbacks of her early time with Kouya, and there is an interspersed phonecall between Soubi and Ritsu-sensei. This collectively reveals (to the viewer) that the zero girls defeated the boys by temporarily switching Sacrifices, and that Yamato was willing to use such reckless tactics because the zero mark is fading from her chest due to genetic engineering bugs. On their way to the fight that evening, Ritsuka tells Soubi he thinks Yamato can feel pain, and to use that in the fight. Eventually Soubi does cause Yamato to cry out, revealing to Kouya that Yamato's zero qualities are fading. Soubi tries to finish them off but Ritsuka stops him. Kouya abandons the battle, ending her role as a fighting unit. The girls decide not to die, but to start a new life together. Meanwhile, Ritsuka wonders more about what Seimei was like as Soubi's master.

Review: The anime has followed the manga flawlessly with this book, albeit that the anime is definitely not as graphic about the lesbianism as portrayed in the manga. Pretty great stuff. If anything, this is the most faithful adaptation I've ever seen when it comes to converting novels/manga to anime. I rather like that they flesh out Yamato and Kouya's relationship more in the manga - then again, you can do more in manga than you can air on TV. Excellent volume, perhaps one of my favourite in the series so far since it exposes so much. Kouya and Yamato are my second favourite pairing next to Soubi and Ritsuka and Soubi and Seimei.
